2015年10月 翻訳のヒント（英訳） － 「～よい」の訳
日本語の「よい」は幅広い意味を持ちます。うっかりしていると原文の意図を誤解することもあり、英訳する際にはよく状況を考える必要があります。幾つか例を見てみましょう。ケース１ 反応を促進するためには、反応系を２００℃以上に加熱するとよい。
この場合の「よい」は「好ましい」の意味で、特許明細書では「加熱することが好ましい」と書かれることが多いと思います。このケースは、preferableやpreferred を使います。
（英訳例）
The reaction system is preferably heated at 200°C or higher.
Heating the reaction system at 200°C or higher is preferred.
The reaction system is preferably heated at 200°C or higher.
Heating the reaction system at 200°C or higher is preferred.
ケース２ 本組成物の酸化を防ぐには安定剤を添加すればよい。
この場合の「よい」は、そうすることの必然性を表していますので、しなければ結果が得られない状況を意味しています。従ってpreferableではなく、必要性を含む積極的な表現とします。

A stabilizer is added to the composition in order to prevent oxidation of the composition.
Addition of a stabilizer is required to prevent oxidation of the composition.
Oxidation of the composition can be prevented by adding a stabilizer thereto.

ケース３ 安定剤は酸性物質であればよい。
この「よい」は、そうであれば十分であることを意味しています。とはいえ、it is sufficient thatとするのは機械的過ぎますので工夫してみましょう。

ケース４ 安定剤は酸性物質としてもよい。
この「よい」は、選択可能範囲を広げる明細書頻出表現です。mayを使って訳しましょう。

原文に「よい」があると、つい言葉にとらわれて it is sufficient that や it is preferred that を使いがちですが、原文における「よい」の意図をしっかり汲み取って、そのニュアンスに沿った英語にすればよいのです。従って翻訳者のフレキシブルな発想が大切となります。
